The Northern Territory has two federal electoral divisions - Solomon and Lingiari. AEC Offices for both divisions are located within the NT office located in the Darwin CBD. The Northern Territory team reports to and is supported by the Queensland team.

During a federal electoral event voting services are coordinated and delivered by NT staff and a large temporary workforce. NT staff manage key functions and temporary staff are required to deliver a wide variety of voting services throughout the NT.

The Opportunity
The IEPP Senior Engagement Officer leads the planning and delivery of the AEC’s Indigenous Electoral Participation Program (IEPP) in the Northern Territory, and will contribute to the AEC IEPP nationally including working with IEPP Engagement Officers across all States and Territories. The role will manage strategic relationships and formal partnerships with government and community based organisations in the provision of culturally appropriate programs including electoral services during a federal election.

The role is responsible for undertaking work that is moderately complex to complex in nature, delivered under limited direction and utilising expertise and knowledge within the community engagement area. In addition to contributing to the strategic planning and delivery of the IEPP, and working with Indigenous electors, the IEPP Engagement Officer will also be required to contribute to community engagement outcomes, including working with CALD, homeless, prisoners, youth and/or people with disabilities.

As part of the delivery of the IEPP program this role is also responsible for the planning and delivery of Remote Area Mobile Polling (RAMP) services to remote areas in the Northern Territory and APY Lands (SA) as part of federal election delivery. RAMP teams deliver polling services to remote Indigenous communities, correctional facilities, regional hospitals and aged care centres.

The key duties of the position include

  • Proven ability to develop, deliver and manage programs and projects
  • Ability to oversee training to community organisations and service providers to deliver education and AEC messages to target communities
  • Experience working with Indigenous communities and/or providing government services and strategies to engage Indigenous people or other culturally diverse groups
  • An understanding of the issues affecting Indigenous people, and an ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with Indigenous people
  • Demonstrated ability to make sound decisions using good judgement based on expertise and analysis of information, in line with operational procedures
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively whilst responding to stakeholder needs and expectations across a geographically dispersed and diverse network
  • Experience in successfully setting priorities and delivering on time quality results in a project / program context
  • Demonstrated analytical skills to show initiative in support of business improvement strategies and provide expert advice
  • Ability to manage staff while developing capabilities, encouraging career development and promoting professionalism
  • Current Drivers Licence

    • Knowledge of, or ability to quickly gain knowledge of Australian electoral law and practice
