John Hunter Hospital’s Transition to Specialty Program (Rehabilitation) is an exciting way to develop your career as a Registered Nurse. The aim of the program is to facilitate a smooth transition and structured pathway into specialised Rehabilitation Nursing, providing you with the knowledge and clinical skills necessary to provide safe and effective care to patients within specialty Rehabilitation units!

Rehabilitation Nursing offers a gratifying career for nurses who want to use all of their clinical skills, make a visible difference in their patients’ lives, and work as part of a collaborative healthcare team. Rehabilitation Nurses work with patients of all ages, and their families or caregivers, soon after the onset of a disabling injury or chronic illness. Rehabilitation Nurses work as part of a well-developed multidisciplinary team to restore patients’ lives so they have freedom and independence again.

As part of our Transition Program you will be offered experience across John Hunter Hospital and Rankin Park Centre Rehabilitation wards. Rotations through each of our wards to support specific skills in stroke care, amputee care, spinal cord injury care, orthopaedic care, neurodegenerative disease care, and chronic disease management. In the program you are supported by Clinical Nurse Consultant, Nurse Unit Manager, Clinical Nurse Educator, Clinical Nurse Specialist, senior registered nurses, experienced enrolled nurses and the allied health team.

As a Registered nurse within Rehabilitation you can expect an extensive orientation to the environment and requirements of Rehabilitation as well as staff development opportunities and study days. Positions are temporary full time for 12 months and annual leave will be built is rostered into the program.
